CDC guidelines recommend “wearing a cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain.” The measure is meant to help reduce the spread of the virus between those interacting in close proximity. In densely-populated urban areas, even when you are outdoors you may require a mask, though — especially during runs, jogs or other breathy outdoor activities that take you closer (and farther) from other people.
Masks do not fully protect you from contracting the virus. Most masks can help reduce transmission of the virus to others by blocking the spread of large droplets after coughing or sneezing — and work best when combined with safety measures. As we are in a lockdown currently, the gyms are closed but the option to run or exercise outdoors remains fairly open across the country. But is it safe to exercise with a face mask on? And how do you find the right one for you?
Generally, experts say it’s safe to exercise with a face mask on. But it can often be uncomfortable especially if you wear thick masks. The more tightly-woven the mask’s fabric is, the harder it is to breathe in it.
Instead of thinking about what a drag it is to wear a mask while running or exercising, let’s see the positive side of it and think of it as an added challenge that provides an extra aerobic benefit – like most training masks do. However you have to choose the right mask!
When shopping for any mask, prioritize material quality and breathability. For instance, the use of Lyocell fabric can prove much more effective than standard cotton fabric. Lyocell is a semi-synthetic fabric that is commonly used as a substitute for cotton or silk. Since it is primarily made from organic ingredients, this fabric is seen as a more sustainable alternative to fully synthetic fibers like polyester. It’s tough, and while tightly woven enough, it still offers at least 5 times more breathability than cotton fabric and 50% greater moisture absorption than cotton. Due to its moisture management, lyocell is also anti-bacterial.
Compared to other cellulose textiles, lyocell is also much better for the environment. While the process of producing this fabric is similar to that which is used to make rayon and other cellulose fabrics, production of lyocell doesn't introduce any toxins into the environment if it is done correctly.
